Being a financial planner can be incredibly rewarding, both psychologically as we see clients achieve their goals, and financially as we build successful practices and businesses. However, the reality is that there are many different ways to structure an advisory firm and serve clients… and as it turns out, some are more commonly associated with advisor happiness and wellbeing than others! In this session, we’ll share the latest Kitces Research about what really drives advisor wellbeing, from autonomy and experience to workplace environment and how much clients value our time. Which matters not just for advisor happiness itself, but as it turns out, are material drivers of retention – from firms being able to retain their advisors, to the profession being able to attract and retain talent to fuel the next generation of financial planners.

Retirement and the Other AI: Anticipatory Intelligence and Your Role as Advisor

Retirement will last 8,000 days, as long as childhood, and the financial professionals who thrive in the longevity economy will be the ones who understand that financial security, while essential, is no longer enough. MIT AgeLab Director Dr. Joe Coughlin draws on decades of research to show how longer lives are reshaping the business of advice across four distinct phases of retirement, each with its own financial stakes, emotional terrain, and defining decisions around identity, housing, caregiving, and independence.
The real competitive advantage in this new landscape isn’t portfolio optimization, it’s what Coughlin calls “Anticipatory Intelligence,” the other AI: the uniquely human ability to recognize life patterns before they emerge, raise the conversations clients cannot yet articulate, and prepare them for what a longer life will inevitably bring. In a world where artificial intelligence can build a financial plan in seconds, the financial professional who sees around corners, who guides clients through all 8,000 days with foresight earned from the lives of hundreds of clients — is the one who is valued and cannot be replaced.
