Joseph F. Coughlin, PhD is Founder and Director of the MIT AgeLab, where he translates global demographic change, consumer behavior, and emerging technology into board-level insight on risk, growth, and long-term competitiveness. He teaches at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies & Planning and the MIT Sloan School of Management’s Advanced Management Program.

Coughlin advises global organizations, across industries, helping leaders anticipate how aging, shifting household structures, and technological disruption are reshaping markets, workforces, and institutional trust.

He has served on advisory boards for Fidelity Investments, Daimler, Bell Canada, and Sanofi-Aventis. Coughlin has led international task forces for the OECD and is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Longevity Economy Committee. He was appointed by President George W. Bush to the White House Advisory Committee on Aging.

Named one of Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business” and cited by The Wall Street Journal for “inventing the future of retirement,” Coughlin was recognized by Investment News as an Icon & Innovator and received the Investments & Wealth Institute’s Consulting Impact Award for the development of longevity planning.
